Softened water? Pay attention to possible damage to the dishes.

Our 20 year old dishwasher is dead. The materials that came with our new Maytag actively encouraged the use of capsules rather than powders or liquids, particularly Cascade Platinum capsules plus CP flush. I tried the provided pattern and was amazed; All my dishes looked new. especially my favorite cobalt blue glass which looked slightly cloudy. I was so impressed I ignored the instructions for my Kinetico water system. For many years I have only used very small amounts of special detergent in powder form and no rinse aid. The dishes were always clean, just looked old. The "new" look didn't last long. Some dishwasher safe clear wine glasses were badly clouded and stained. Later, damage to the rivets of some kitchen knives occurred. These items have been washed in the dishwasher for many years. I contacted water softeners; I've been told that Cascade is very sharp, which is why it washes dishes so well without a pre-rinse. They warned that other plates, including my blue glass, would likely be damaged with continued use. At her suggestion I will use up the rest of the specialty powder (now sold out) and then look for the cheapest brand as it will be less harsh. It has to be powder or liquid because I just don't want to split the pods in half. I hope my experience will save someone's harness.
