Easy and quick to use

We have 2 full size freezers full of groceries, one for meat which I buy in bulk from farmers and one for raw pet food and everything we use on sale or buy in bulk. As a result, foods can sit for a year or more before we eat them, and they don't always last that long. (Both freezers are self-defrosting, which is bad for the food.) I buy raw pet food in 50-pound boxes that come in 1-pound portions. Now only one of our cats eats it, so it's enough for a year. Chubs aren't airtight, and sometimes the bags they're packed in have holes in them. So they can dry out a lot after a few months even if we put them in zIploc bags. Also, my husband loves to buy giant turkeys for the holidays and bag up the leftovers to use within a few months. So I thought a vacuum sealer might be a good idea to preserve food and keep it fresh during those long storage periods. I know you should vacuum bare food, but I decided to try it on a pet. Feeding chub, as well as ground bison chub, which I get when I buy my annual bison quarter. They seem to seal well despite already having a plastic sleeve (they come in a plastic bag that fits the chub very snugly). I'll have to test them out in a few months and see how they hold up, but the vacuum pack looks good to me. This vacuum sealer is also great for packing turkey to keep it fresh when we're not using it. We currently pack it in ziplock bags but it's still drying out compared to what it looks like when freshly cooked. This vacuum sealer was easier to use than I expected. I've never used it, so this is all new to me. No need to wait for it to heat up (like the laminator which can take 5 minutes to prepare). You simply place groceries in the pouch, tape the edge of the pouch to the seal and press the auto button. It sucks the air out and seals the bag. Just make sure your fingers are pointing towards the edge of the top when you press the top down so you don't push the buttons when closing and activate the wrong option. It comes with 5 individual pouches plus a roll. pouch and a knife attached to the top of the machine. You can simply roll out the bag to the desired length and cut it easily. And it comes with a hose that you can attach to the can to suck it up. My only complaint about it would be that the manual isn't very well written as the author obviously doesn't speak English as a first language. So some of the instructions are a bit confusing when you first read them, although you can understand what they mean.

Pros
  • Useful beyond its intended purpose
Cons
  • No mold required
