I would describe myself as an aging semi-audiophile on a budget (current 5.1 system: B&W 684, Marantz SR7005 receiver, Mirage subwoofer and Audyssey surround sound with meticulous room equalization). I'm retired, have a small DJ hobby/business and do a bit of audio production/editing (mixing remixes, adjusting volume/speakers, crossfading, editing video audio, etc.). Over the years I have owned several sound rigs made by most major and not so major brands. The reason I mention this is because one of my least favorite systems was the Bose Modular Surround System, which replaced some KEFs for aesthetic reasons and for reasons of family happiness, which I soon came to regret (replacing KEFs with Bose and not in the family world). I recently bought a Bose SoundDock Portable for our kitchen to replace some Audioengine A2s that were borrowed from my computer and just didn't look or sound as good in the kitchen (it's not the speakers fault). After reading the reviews, I decided to take the plunge and try the Bose again, thinking the SoundDock Portable would fit better into the available kitchen space. To my BIG surprise, when I play the same source on the Bose in the kitchen as I do on the main system (10x more expensive), the tonal matching at medium volumes is remarkably similar/seamless, which even my wife noticed (positively). . I'm not sure if this speaks Bose in the absolute sense, but I'm certainly surprised and pleased that it sounds so good to my ears.
