If the "wet appearance" doesn't go away after rubbing the compound, yes you've worked through the clear coat. A good rule of thumb is that if you pick up a scratch with your fingernail, it's too deep to polish, but you can always work a little to balance the surroundings and make it less noticeable. Just don't overdo it. Note: If you are using it with a rotary tool, you will need something to attach the velcro to. I use this: Astro 4606 6" PU Velcro backing.
