THREE STAR PRODUCT, 5 STAR CUSTOMER SUPPORT

I purchased a 240GB Extreme 500 Portable SSD on sale in November 2015 for only $79.99. 3.0 and every subsequent login behaved as if it was the first use: I had to accept the end user license agreement and then I was told that the Secure Access Store was already installed and asked if I wanted to use it or not. Also, Windows 10 started warning me twice every time I log in that the device is corrupt and I need to run CHKDSK (don't do that). Support asked me to back up all files, erase everything on the SSD, reformat it, and then reinstall Secure Access V3.0. No problems, except that when I tried to use the built-in data recovery utility, a message appeared saying there was no backup to restore! The software seems to remember if it created a backup, but the new software doesn't look for the backup in the default location. All my data is gone. Not quite. I copied and pasted my backup files into the device and in fact they were re-encrypted and the file directory was garbage so it didn't work. SanDisk and I were simultaneously looking for a workaround. The useless files in the Extreme 500 were copied to the default location (after I moved the original backup). This junk backup has been deleted and the original moved to its own folder. Having just created a backup, Secure Access successfully restored my files. Happy happy. Except for the specter of an end-user license agreement and device damage warnings, which quickly returned. SanDisk had no explanation, but they stepped up and asked me to send the device in for analysis (after copying my files, this time unencrypted, to my computer). I destroyed the files on the SSD but not the software and sent it back. Upon receipt they sent me a new Extreme 510 480GB. It has the new Secure Access V3.1 and has been working great for weeks. Btw I also have another Extreme 500 (480GB) that has been working great since I bought it in early 2016. TWO NOTES: First, I am aware of an issue with the Extreme 500's connector. When I use it, it's always plugged in so there's no wear or stress on the connector. I don't know if they improved the Extreme 510 in this regard or not, but recent reviews should say so. Second, don't update your 2.0 software if it's working fine. However, if you have version 3.0 you should copy all your files (unencrypted) to your computer and then upgrade to version 3.1 with secure access.
