I'm in my fifties, medium height, flat feet. My knees aren't in the best shape either - my right knee is extremely torque sensitive (foot rotation == pain!). I have to keep my step steady or I'll soon drown in the weeds. In other words, I am the case. Can shoes solve these problems? Well, not quite, but the GEL-Kayano 17 offers powerful support without weighing a ton. Very comfortable shoes too - increased my daily runs by 30% and slowed my pace by almost a minute. If you need support, these shoes are an inexpensive and very comfortable solution. The asymmetrical laces also make me chuckle - I don't know why, they just look a bit odd. Recommended by an old man with bad knees. It will likely work wonders for runners who have fewer problems, too.
