Before I bought this I saw that some users were reporting a strong chemical smell. This bothered me because I am very sensitive to chemicals and have a strong sense of smell. I thought it might be the dye/bleach so I ordered a champagne color (which I thought was the closest to natural color). It's either paint, or others don't know what leather smells like, or I'm just lucky. The only smell I noticed upon opening the box was a fairly strong smell of fresh leather. I think it could be described as a semi-chemical smell, but it happens every time you get a new skin, especially in a sealed package, and it's not at all uncommon. It also disappeared within a day after being taken out of the bag. I still smell a very faint odor when I pick it up and bury my face in it, but I really have to bury my nose in my hair, which I never want to do with a rug this thick. I think if you're thinking about sleeping on it, you should probably choose something else. But if you're going to use it as a rug, as part of the decor, or even as something to drape over a blanket at the foot of the bed, you're fine. This is a really great treadmill mat! It is very thick and comfortable to walk on. The color of champagne is saturated, goes to the roots, as can be seen in the photo. Dirt attracts, but shakes off quite easily. Also, I have it partly because we live near a beach with hardwood floors and three big dogs, so there's always some sand on the floor, and I'm tired of stalking sand in our bed. I wanted something soft and thick that I could walk on before we went to bed, something that would catch the sand and that was just right for us. That was great! No sand in the bed and your feet feel great!
