I don't like being weighed down by a bulky backpack because it can hurt my back and shoulders, which is impossible with these straps. I was able to carry my water bottle with ease and didn't feel overweight at all. There is a small bag with a zipper in the packaging. There are compartments in the bag where I could put some money, my ID and a debit card. The two main compartments are large enough for my iPhone and other small items.
