I have a very messy cat, who insists on taking his food out of his bowl and dropping it on the floor to eat it. This mat is big enough for me to put the bowl at the back end and have enough room in front of it for him to drop and eat. No more crumbs on the floor. Even better, when he has wet food there are no more sticky spots on the floor. The mat wipes up in a jiffy and the floor stays clean. The sides are high enough to contain the food. If he decided to knock over his water dish, they are probably not high enough to contain the entire contents. If he just splashes in it, there's no problem.
