I needed a fast portable drive that could be used with both new and old Mac laptops. With an old laptop (2013 model, High Sierra OS) I used a Caldigit Thunderbolt 3 hub with an Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. Please note that a powered hub is required as the Thunderbolt adapter does not power the drive for this connection. Not the cheapest way but I needed speed, reliability and stability. The pluggable drive worked right out of the box. Since I only use Mac computers, I reformatted the drive. There were no problems. As stated in the product description, the drive comes with a short Thunderbolt 3 cable attached to the drive cage. Suitable for my purpose, as the cable length doesn't matter. I am very satisfied and recommend this product.
