Review on Dell UltraSharp U2520D 25-inch Backlit Monitor with Anti-Glare Screen and ASIMonitor32 HD by Andrew Fest

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Ok monitor - my new test

I will compare this to my other monitor, the Asus MX27AQ and my previous Dell U2415 monitor. I needed a second monitor but wanted a 25" 2K screen as the 27" screen is too big for my office. Mac Compatibility: All 3 work well with my 2018 Mac Mini. Asus has 3 color calibration profiles while Dell has 10. Calibration. Out of the box, the Dell U2520D has the smoothest color calibration I've seen. After spending 2 hours tweaking the settings, I think I finally got what I wanted. For comparison: U2415 and MX27AQ did not have to make any settings. For the U2520D I used the Asus calibration profile and also made many changes to the monitor's OSD menu. ComfortView: This is the fancy name for Dell's blue light filter. Dell only has 1 setting and cannot run with other presets. Asus has 4 presets that can be overlaid on top of all other presets. HDR: nothing more than a gimmick. All it does is add a touch of brightness. In addition, every time the screen loads, the color is corrected in a split second, which is very annoying. There are 4 HDR settings up to HDR400. I ended up turning it off. Enlightenment: Pretty good work by Dell, almost non-transparent. Text sharpness: The U2520D has the best of the three, likely due to its smaller screen size, which is packed with pixels. USB-C: This is a really great feature, especially for connecting to a Mac. You can choose whether you want to supply charging current or not. In the case of a desktop, the correct option is to disable charging. For a laptop, you get 90W, which should work with most MacBooks. Price: $350 but all are increasing prices due to Covid-19. I paid $400, same as I paid for the Asus MX27AQ. But that doesn't cost that much. I would consider buying a second one if it falls under $300, but unless you absolutely need it I definitely wouldn't pay more. In summary, this is a decent monitor, but it does require a lot of calibration. For less than 300€ that would be a good buy. If you don't mind a larger monitor at this price point, I'd recommend the Asus MX27AQ.

Pros
  • Make the most of limited desk space with this compact stand.
Cons
  • Heavier than other monitors
