Review on TOPWAY 115V Electric Sump Utility Pump 330 GPH 1/10HP - Water Transfer with Hose Kit by Anthony Shepherd

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Decent pump, good for drain pumps

Bought this pump for the occasional need around the house where water needs to be drained from various spots. One use case was the rare occasion that our air conditioner's condensate drain became clogged, leaving water in the drain pan and causing the unit to stop cooling. We have a department that lives in the attic so it wasn't much fun going there with a shop vacuum and then going down a few times to empty the vacuum. My plan was to use this pump with a garden hose attached and pump water to the sink. However, my first actual use of this pump was not in this scenario. My wife bought a small vinyl paddling pool (6 foot diameter, 250 gallon capacity). We filled it and it sat there for 2 weeks collecting leaves, pollen, bugs and other wonderful things. One day after watching a science experiment, I got the green light to drain the pool. I pulled this pump out, followed the instructions (add vegetable oil to lubricate the pump, etc.), connected the hoses and let go. This vacuum is quite noisy, but it didn't bother me that much. The pump is rated for up to 330 gallons per hour. However, the real world test showed much lower numbers. It took about 2 hours to get to the bottom of the pool. The pool was quite full (again 250 gallons based on pool characteristics). This means that the actual throughput in the real world for this use was approximately 125 gallons per hour. It was a bit disappointing hence the 4 star rating. I feel like if this happened at 200-300 GPH I wouldn't lower the score too much. But since it was well under half the advertised top speed, I was a bit disappointed. Again, I fully understand the fact that this is a "MAX GPH" rating. But what are the unusual scenarios that would actually lead to such full throughput? Or would it be better to specify "minimum expected GPH"? While this guy is a handy item for some small jobs (like my main use case for an HVAC drain pan), it makes me feel like a submersible pump at maybe 1/4 horsepower. with a garden hose connector (about the same cost, maybe a little more) is the best option.

Pros
  • Great price
Cons
  • Not the best
