I've had a scale that reads up to 5000 grams, but sometimes I have to be accurate to a tenth of a gram. When I mix epoxy products like JB Weld it's hard to tell if I squeezed out the same amount. If I'm weighing and only need 1 gram of each substance, I need a scale that shows tenths. House ants usually like sugar syrup. If it contains borax, it can destroy the nest. I make about a teaspoon by heating it in a metal pot that I put on the stove briefly. I want it to cool to the consistency of molasses. Without a scale to show tenths, it was difficult to find the right ratio of water and sugar. The amount of borax also plays a role. With too little, they can return within a few days. If there are too many, they probably won't eat it. Using scales, I found that if I start with a certain amount of sugar, say 2.0 grams, add half the amount of water, say 1.0 gram, and 1/1, it works. 10 the same amount of borax, say 0.2 grams. The scale allows me to refine the recipe by adjusting the water to the right consistency and increasing the amount of borax for a faster effect. If the ants don't eat it, I can reduce the amount of borax. Dakin's solution is the best I've found for treating wounds and infections. It is a household bleach diluted to 0.5% and buffered to a pH of around 10. Dakin preferred borates. Research a century ago showed that Dakin's with 1.5% Borax was still at full potency after a month on the shelf. (Shelf life is probably better these days. Bleach manufacturers use purer salt, and cold tap water is less likely to stagnate in metal pipes.) Dakin's solution costs about $20 a pint, but a half-pint can be made with 2-cent bleach and 1-cent borax. My jar of bleach is labeled 6.0%. Dakin's is 1/12 stronger, so I use 1 part bleach to 11 parts water. For one cup, that would be 20ml of bleach to 220ml of water. Graduated cylinders are good at measuring liquid, but I need a scale that can weigh 3.6 grams of borax. The scale comes with two transparent pans. The smaller one can be flipped over and mounted above the platform to protect it from impact. The larger one can be placed all over the scale. This keeps it protected on the counter and the elastic strap keeps it in place so it can even be tucked away in your pocket. It's the size of a peanut butter sandwich. My old scale switches itself off after 2 minutes. One day he caught me adding an ingredient to a recipe. I would be in a dilemma if I didn't mark the last read. Fuzion stays on for 3 minutes. It's much safer. Fuzion offers a choice of 6 weight units. Looking through them, I realized I didn't like the scale. Lighting cobalt blue. Low contrast is good for reading numbers, but distracting for reading lowercase letters. I prefer the almost white backlight on my old scale. Addendum: Once, two years later, I needed 0.3 grams of borax to make a small ant bait. The scale was no longer sensitive enough to measure it. I knew I hadn't dropped it and I don't think I would have put too much weight on the platform. In two years, pollutants in the air can have contaminated moving parts. Cleaning might have fixed it, but I couldn't analyze it. I bought this one: when the old one worked, when the new one, and the case can provide better protection from airborne contaminants.
