Very soft! I was surprised. The material is very light, no compression. The waist has a thin elastic band that runs through the bodice but does not compensate for compression at the widest part of the waist. If you want comfort and freedom they are great. My measurements are much larger than the XL on the size chart (waist 35, hips 48) but they fit me. Very elastic. EDIT: They are so comfortable I went back and bought a 5 pack! I also bought a pair of longer ones to wear under dresses to avoid chafing on my thighs. I would still like a compression pad to flatten the tummy though. I have very large hips and hips/butt compared to my waist, so it is very difficult for me to shop for clothes. In fact, they're a bit tight at the top and they don't dig into my thighs at all! Very soft and elastic. But they don't smooth anything.
