Sharp enough even wide open. Not as sharp as more expensive longer focal length lenses, but it doesn't have to be. Focuses very well on my Olympus and Panasonic cameras. Smooth mechanical operation and excellent image stabilization, especially with cameras that support Panasonic's Dual Image Stabilization. Weather protection closes the deal for me. So why not five stars? This is because the optics decenter a bit when zooming to 300mm, which usually results in softness on the right edge of the image. Research has shown me that this is a common problem with 100-300mm lenses, including version 1 (which means Panasonic has been improving quality for a long time but hasn't). Also, the focus ring seems very cheap compared to every other lens I own. These issues are acceptable to me, but may be severe enough for some users to either try many copies of the lens or settle on an alternative.
