As other reviewers have explained, some small animals will stop eating when they are sick and you may need to force them to eat in order for them to recover. Or a small animal can eat but needs a little help to gain weight after an illness or surgery. Or maybe you have a guinea pig or rabbit with broken front teeth (which will grow back) or permanently removed front teeth. These are common situations where your vet may recommend critical care. Your veterinarian knows how much and how often your pet should eat. I've used both this and the finely ground version. Fine grits are easier to syringe, but you *can* spray with this type *if* you have a large, wide-bore syringe (e.g. 10cc). I confess I have often blown myself (both walls and floors) with a coarse grind from a syringe due to a clog. So if you have to syringe feed a lot, maybe try a fine grind first. (By the way, 1ml and 10ml syringes - no needles, of course - are also an important part of a small animal emergency kit.) for weight control - and don't tell him, but I also secretly inject his liquid glucosamine. He loves it and will devour it himself (although not all of it). He still eats hay, pellets and veggies so it's like a side dish or treat.
