For some stupid reason the entire photocatalytic part of this cleaner was made out of molded ABS plastic which is not suitable for use in UV light. Since this entire step is UV based, it means the plastics used will quickly start to break down and give off a burning smell, which you can also see in several other people's reviews. After a few weeks of operation, shells and parts in the vicinity of the lamp become brittle, discolor, and emit the prescribed burning odor. The PCO stage is poorly shielded and leaks a lot of UV to nearby parts like the fan and other airflow moldings. After replacing the entire purifier photocatalytic "block” with a properly shielded ASA case, the smell is gone and the PCO stage is back to its job. If you smell that burning odor and don't care about the PCO stage, you can simply remove all three shells behind the top filter and the device will continue to function normally, albeit with the "UV Lamp" warning light at the top.
