These seem "shiny" enough on the surface that they may show scratches before long, from knives and forks: but, so far, so good! They are attractive, flexible for use in the microwave or the table, and can easily be washed up by hand or in the dishwasher. We got them mainly for use in a basement level kitchenette for snacks and baked goods, and they will work great for that. Decent size for luncheon plates, definitely too small for dinner plates. One has already been dropped and it did not break, but it may have made a hairline crack that will become obvious later. They are substantial without being too heavy, even with chronic hand and wrist pain. Be careful taking them out of the microwave, because if you heat the food up really hot, the heat will transfer through the surface of the plate and could slightly burn your hand/fingers.
