Lots of noise and doesn't work half the time

I used these with my Logitech Z 5.1 channel speakers as my new computer didn't have a Toslink connection. I had a lot of trouble getting my speakers to work with these cables. They work about 50% of the time and often cause an audible hum coming from the speakers. I have no problem plugging my headphones directly into my computer and have never had any problems with these speakers, so I think these cables must be the problem.
