
I have a different brand hitch that used a split ring lock washer on the lower hitch cap bolt and when I applied the manufacturers recommended torque of 260 ft-lb it squeezed just take out the lock washer and destroy it. Looking at Kurt's clutches, they used tapered washers on both bolts, so I ordered them and rebuilt the clutch head to use that type of washer. From a technical point of view they are superior in every way since the idea is to maintain axial tension on the threads. They picked up the torque needed without harmful distortion, and I feel like my hitch is nothing to worry about anymore when towing a 9000-pound RV.
