Review on Jacquard Solarfast Brown Dye 8oz by Amy Mcleod

Revainrating 4 out of 5

It works, but it needs something PRACTICAL

Okay, here's the thing: DO NOT open this bottle and pour it over a nice new t-shirt in expectation of amazing results. I strongly advise you to take an old piece of fabric (or test paper if you're going that route), cut it up and do some test runs. It's not easy to work with him. Here are a few things I've learned: 1.) It's very easy to overuse. The fabric absorbs this material, so before applying the picture (or objects) shine it a little, spread it out and wipe off as much excess as possible. Actually I decided to put something in a cup, apply with a brush and then wipe the area. After that, get off with a paper towel. Yes, it's a bit wasteful, but putting it directly on the shirt is too much. 2.) REALLY attach the image (or object) firmly to the fabric. I used transparencies (I printed out two, folded them in half) and taped everything together. Then I rubbed the film so that it stuck to the shirt as firmly as possible. 3.) Detergent is absolutely REQUIRED. I've seen some people say they just washed their shirt. nope Don't compromise, it won't work. Get a special detergent, it's not that expensive. You don't need much either, because. 4.) Hand wash the shirt. Don't leave this step to your car, it won't work well. Put on gloves, take a small bath, heat the water as hot as possible, use a cup of dish soap and wash for a long time. The instructions say 10 minutes, but that might be an exaggeration. But do it at least 5 times. Your design may fade a little. It's worth getting the background down.5. ) White is REALLY hard to make. Yes, the detergent will remove excess non-activated lightfast dye, but a slight browning will result. It's MUCH worse if you use too much dye. It cannot be removed once overcooked. As an example of such things, look at my picture. The shirt on the left is finished. Too much dye. Insufficient laundry washed in the machine. The color doesn't even look black (it's reddish, a sure sign you've overdone it). The shirt on the right is very lightly dyed, aggressive hand wash. It is possible to create a design without a hard border, but it is very difficult. Many headaches can be avoided by using a "frame" for your image. Especially on white. If you go brimless I suggest a colored shirt. Also make the light-blocking border very large. The color will come off, you can see how it was on my test runs. It took me 4 or 5 tries to find a good method. I hope I can blow your mind in 2 tries! Taking off a star because this stuff is very, very difficult to work with and they don't have really good instructions. They need a troubleshooting/gotchas section, but they want you to think it's easy. They just do it on video. It's not like this. But I REALLY like it! to find a good method.
