they fit me perfectly. I have 6 smoke alarms, 5 of them with this mount. They are strong enough to hold and the 3m tape is great - if you apply it correctly (yes there is a way other than just banging it on the roof). To attach, clean the area where you want to stick the metal base to the wall or ceiling. I used alcohol wipes. Allow to dry, then press the 3M adhesive on this area and press for 10-15 seconds. Apply pressure to all parts of the metal base and make sure the tape is snug against the wall/ceiling. Ready. None of them have come loose from the ceiling or wall they are mounted to. Very easy to use, very strong magnets. It's great and I'll be getting more. Why 4 stars? I removed one to change its position. The 3m tape removed a round stain of paint from it, but I don't think you can have such strong adhesion and easy removal at the same time.
