Review on CDI Electronics 511-9766 Enclosed Adjustable Spark Gap Tester - 8 Cylinder Engine Diagnostic Tool by John Vann

Not impressed, requires modifications out of the box, does not work with some OEMs

First of all I have to say that this is the first time I've been disappointed with a CDI product, usually their stuff is absolute high-quality. So here are the issues I see with this tester: 1) Quality ground wire BUT very strong and a bit too short almost like a 2/0 battery wire which feels heavy meaning you have to manually shape the wire beforehand to get it to reach him. appropriate grounding point (be careful not to damage the plastic case). I'll have to cut it off and make my own out of a softer cable. 2) Adjustable eyelets are too short for almost every Japanese ignition system (I've tried Yamaha Marine, Honda, and Suzuki so far) so you're forced to buy their adapter cables for about $60 or make your own like I did . did. They work great on GM/Ford vehicles and some OMC products. 3) If you use this outdoors, it's very hard to see the spark behind the plastic cover, even in the shop it's hard to see. Unless you're using this tester in an area where open sparks will bother you, you're much better off with CDI's $150 519-S48 tester. It costs $20 more than this one after you buy (almost mandatory) extension cords. *update* If the connector wires are connected to the connector without a tip cap (connected directly to the threads) this tester will not work (some Honda, most BRP Rotax engines use this style). Now I can make even more adapters for this thing!
