We bought this for my husband and I to help our 16 year old with his basketball protection. I like it because it gives me a wider stance which makes it more of a challenge for a 16 year old who is a foot taller than me and in great shape to protect me. This allows me to increase my size on the court. My husband who is about the same height as our son only uses it to push our son into the seat without hurting his shoulders! The inner foam padding is strong but not too soft, which is what I think you want here. You don't want anything too hard as it will hurt if you use it defensively to make it work. For the price, I find the outer black layer a bit thin. It just doesn't feel well sewn together. We've had it for about six weeks now and we use it frequently - I would say four or five times a week. Of course my husband and son have a harder time with this than I do - they're both bigger - but I've noticed a bit of fraying at the gusset seam at the top. I will say maybe the outer shell is not quite suitable to replace the foam? There is a zip at the top so I think it could be done if needed. It's not a huge blocking pad, and given the price, I wish the outer shell didn't feel so cheap. Still I would give it four stars as the inner foam seems to be of decent quality and the padding certainly helps with our son's workout.
