Before that I bought three budget mattress pads - a budget brand from Walmart and a budget brand from Target. Both burst before I could put them on the bed, and both gave off the irresistible smell of a new inflatable pool. The third was fine, but it had a plastic lining that was glued to the fabric upper, meaning it couldn't be wiped clean. We have a toddler, accidents happen (that's why we needed a mattress topper) and after a few runs in the washing machine the plastic trim died and it wasn't waterproof anymore. I finally gave up trying to buy the cheapest mattress topper. and got this. It wipes clean, didn't smell terrible when I took it out of the box, and the plastic is much heavier and stiffer than any of my previous purchases so it won't tear! There are many cheaper ones out there, but I could save money if I bought this one first instead of three useless ones, and *then* this one.
