The buzzing and humming made me think of returning the goods at first. I connected the ground wire from the phono stage to the ground jack on the mixer. My configuration: phono stage -> preamplifier -> mixer + equalizer -> active monitors. The hum and hum has been successfully suppressed. Next was the MM/MC switch, which obviously doesn't work as advertised, ie the MC label corresponds to the MM head and the MM label corresponds to the MC head. But I don't care as long as the result is clean and the signal is well above the noise.
