The charger gets very hot

I bought it in April. It worked great for several weeks and charged my phone many times faster than a regular device. So when I walked into the room last night, I smelled electronics and plastic. My husband's laptop was connected to it. Both the device and the laptop felt very hot. I don't feel safe to use it anymore and apparently it's time to return it.
