This is a discreet light. We made some changes and changed the lighting in the kitchen and dining room in this style. This can be a problem in an installation with all cables inside. You can cut them off, but then you reduce your options and spoil the light for the return. My advice is to decide how long to hang them. Check it out, go up the stairs and let your wife approve. Remind them that once the act is decided, it is done. (It isn't, but don't specify an option lol). Once you've decided on the length, sit down with a pack of zip ties. Carefully circle the wires around the perimeter of the base and tie them together with zip ties. Keep them away from the center and below the rim. No rush, it's a bit of a puzzle. If everything is ok, just install it like any other device. Since you've taken the time to clean up the wires, you won't have any trouble on the stairs. That's why you don't want to give options to change the length after hanging. You can get an inch or so to set it perfectly, but more than that you'll have to cut the zip ties. The lids of the jars are a bit flimsy and the thread doesn't seem to fit the jars perfectly. Try not to cross them and tighten them tightly as you won't be able to turn the cans all the way.
