When trying to fill small compartments, a film of water forms on top causing them to fill unevenly. Therefore, remove them with a knife or spatula to speed up the filling. Also, those tiny cubes took a long time to appear, even when hot water was spilled on the substrate, and wasn't worth the time and frustration. If only this problem could be solved! The size of the cubes are great for chewing ice cubes - we like to cool off by eating ice cubes and they are perfect. Too bad it's awkward to empty. I'll keep trying to find a way to do this - it might be best to run hot water into the tray from the top rather than the bottom.
