lens beast.

What the lens delivers discreetly, it more than makes up for in image quality. First, it's a huge, heavy, intimidating piece of glass and plastic. You can hold it in your hands, but not for very long. Your back will feel the weight of this monster when you carry it around in your bag. It also takes up too much space in any camera bag you bring to the party. Even the lens hood is ridiculously clunky. The zoom mechanism is easy to hold and works smoothly. The controls are very well thought out and the softswitches snap in well and solidly. Little things like the positive feedback from the switches make lens ownership a pleasure. When pressing hard on the A7iii, the lens would not focus. But that was in very poor lighting and constant focus. Even when shooting in horrible light and high ISO, the camera and lens hit rather than miss. In better light, the combination was very accurate. Wide open, the bokeh is beautiful, creamy and flawless. The depth of field is very shallow, especially at close range. Surprisingly, this is a very good landscape lens, delivering very good color and sharpness, especially when closed a bit. While this lens can be used for street and covert photography, it's too obvious for covert photography. First class fit and finish. What do you expect from a G-Master lens and at what price. The lens hood even has a small window through which you can access the circular polarizing filter. By the way, you must remember to close the window. If there's a problem with the lens, it's the price Sony charges for it. You can save a lot of money by buying a Sigma for a very low price. Tamron offers an even better deal. G Master lenses offer the absolute best in the Sony E-mount system and command the highest possible price premium. For the obsessed like me, that's a compromise we're willing to make, for others Sigma probably makes more sense.

Pros
  • Stable construction with constant lens length when focusing and zooming, powerful optical Steady-Shot image stabilization, dust and moisture resistant for reliable performance
Cons
  • Unbelievable price
