The lens's stepping motor is more sophisticated because of its intended use for video. I "chased" it by taking pictures in a variety of environments and with a variety of subjects. When directed toward the center, the shot is dead on. In my opinion, it's always best to have the newest, greatest model available. The buyer was as happy as an elephant with the deal. Put the EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens away and get the newer version.
