Great smart charger at an affordable price - restored my AGM battery!

*** UPDATE November 7, 2020 *** My worn out AGM battery is still working fine. Still holds about 75% charge. I haven't had to leave my charger running since I last wrote this review. So far, so good! It was a great investment as it saved me from having to buy a new battery right away. I hope to live another year, maybe longer. I will inform you again in due course. __________________________________________________________________________________________ I was amazed at all the crazy looking car battery chargers/maintainers that came out (most with unknown Chinese names), many of which have suspiciously positive reviews. Additionally, old solid American brands like DeWalt, Black & Deck, and Stanley didn't get good reviews. So I took a chance and bought this special "Smart Charger" from ADPOW (short for "Add Power"). First, the photos on the site don't convey the true meaning of the device. Wires solid 8 gauge thick. The position of the connections has been thought through down to the smallest detail. The device is a good weight without being too heavy and doesn't get very hot during use. The front panel with LED indicators is clean and tight. Secondly, the functional design of this smart charger is perfectly tailored to the needs of consumers. I was tempted to get a full test charger with all sorts of analyses. After doing enough research, I realized that all of this would be lost to a simple car enthusiast. This charger does everything you need to do - check the condition of the battery and charge it at a reasonable pace. The port setting allows you to connect a dedicated port, which is very handy if you plan to use this charger more than a few times a year. This makes mounting very easy. In addition, the device has mounting holes so you can easily mount it on a wall or panel in your garage. Third, it helped restore my car battery to a more usable condition. It's a 3 year old AGM guy and is slowly struggling with my infrequent car use since I got it (I didn't use the car for daily commuting like I used to). When I spent the weekend installing a new car radio, using the interior lights for a few hours and turning the radio on for a while without the car running, the battery died. He couldn't start the car. I started the car and drove the car for a while to restore decent tension. It worked fine. However, I found that the battery tends to rest at 11.9V. At 11.5V it doesn't have enough current to run, so that wasn't good. The ADPOW device cleaned my battery as it was initially fine, started bulk charging and then switched to absorption charging (ie lower continuous DC voltage) about 20 minutes later. My multimeter confirmed that the unit was putting out 14.5 volts, as was the car's alternator. After about 4 hours, the charger switched to "recovery". I expected that because the battery was very empty. My multimeter indicated that the input voltage from the ADPOW rose to 15.5V. After another 4 hours, the green "FULLY CHARGED" light came on. I checked the battery voltage and it first showed 13.6V. After leaving it for a day I found the charge was at 12.25V. This is not a healthy battery (60%). 12.32V - 70%, 12.42V - 80%, 12.5V - 90% and 12.7V - 100%. So I restarted the charger. He went back to repair, but it took half the time. After that the open circuit voltage showed 12.45v. After driving the car and leaving it for a day it showed 12.35v. So my battery is now about 75% of its original capacity but is still usable. I will most likely need to replace the battery by the end of 2020, so the ADPOW charger saved me from having to replace it immediately. I am very happy with the design and performance of this device. It's small enough to fit in the trunk of a car or in the luggage compartment. I think it's a worthwhile investment in a reliable battery with maximum lifespan. By the way, don't skimp on the battery. It's worth spending more to get the AGM type. They are more reliable and last longer than traditional lead-acid automotive batteries.
