Review on SmallRig Threaded Trigger Panasonic Fujifilm by Eric Wright

Great pen, with one annoying flaw.

I really like this pen and would recommend it to everyone except for one really annoying flaw: the cord. But that's not it. My main complaint is that the connector protrudes from the bottom of the handle. So if you use it on the left, it will dig into the flesh of your hand and completely negate the comfort of the wooden grip. It really doesn't show up in product photos, so I took a few to illustrate the issue. It gets very uncomfortable very quickly. Basically I bought this pen because it was reversible so I could use it on the left side of the camera. Even though I'm right-handed, I prefer to shoot with my right hand to adjust the camera and so on. Also, when I tried it on the right side, the balance was really off, especially with it sticking out so far. Since the weight of the lens is more to the left of the camera, the placement on the left actually gives my entire little rig a more balanced look, especially when I switch to the top handle on the fly. The one I bought comes with only one cable (Panasonic) and works well with the Lumix DC-G95 but not my FZ-300, although it fits nicely in the remote port. (Note: it only manages video, not photos, so keep that in mind.) It's good to see that they're offering this version with all three cable options for those who may have multiple camera brands. (At least that's what I'm assuming from the description.) I can understand why they made the cable that way, but I can't understand why they put the connector there. I've looked into possible third-party replacement parts, but since this is a largely proprietary cable, it looks like you'll have to make it yourself, and you really need to be able to solder to do so. Iron. (Which I'm not.) Bottom line, I'd recommend this grip for right-handers, or for use with two grips if you have a left-hand grip that can balance it. But until they fix the cable port issue, I wouldn't recommend it to left-handers or people like me who like to shoot with their left hand. I decided to let it go and live with the hassle, hoping that SmallRig would eventually fix this shortcoming. And when they do, hopefully they'll make the improved cable available for separate purchase so I don't have to buy a whole new pen.
