I have an OWC Thunderbay 4 RAID with Thunderbolt 3. To break that tech jargon, I have a bunch of spinning hard drives that I don't really want to shake. I have a strained knee. So I don't want a RAID drive on my desk. So I put the drive on a nearby shelf and connected this optical cable to my MacBook Pro. Now the drives don't wobble anymore and I still have a super fast connection. A note: optical cables can be much longer, but they don't carry power like copper. So my example was good. But if you're going to say you're using your monitor and your laptop's power supply at the same time, you're currently limited by physics to 6ft and copper.
