By looking at this product you will like me understand the limitations of the software/hardware to complete the task of converting old video/audio media to digital format. To be honest, I did not find the ideal option, all proposals have pros and cons. After converting a few dozen Hi8 tapes, the short conclusion about this product is that it does the job, but with limited capabilities. PROS - Easy to use and install on PC/MACE Easy to connect an analogue source to a computer Decent performance on both video and audio CONS - Recording time is limited to three hours. Limited output options = 4:3 or 16:9; MP4 (I have the PC version. I understand the PC/Mac version also outputs mov) The conversion is a two step process. Download it and then convert it to low to medium or high quality (high quality file size for a 30 minute video is around 1.2 to 1.5 GB). It takes 15-30 minutes to convert to MP4 after downloading. I had a 3 hour tape that took 3 hours to load and another 53 minutes to convert to MP4. I am sure that the computer you are using will affect the conversion time to some extent. As with all software/hardware options available, the transfer can be tedious as it is a 'real-time recording'. You can set the recording time and just let it pass until it's done. RECOMMENDATION - If you purchase this item, order a decent S-Video cable and RCA cable to connect your output device to your computer. The supplied cable is useless and has resulted in many hours of failed audio/video transfer from camera to PC. Replacing the cables that came with the device fixed this issue.
