Nobsound Tone: beautiful design, mediocre sound

The Nobsound Tone has an attractive design, convenient location and connectivity. Despite its small size, it offers USB, a 3.5mm input jack, a headphone output (also 3.5mm) on the front, and speaker mounting ports on the back. RCA line input and power supply (included) are connected on the back. Tone also offers Bluetooth connectivity. Volume and input selection are combined in a large circular bar on the top of the device. The device's appearance is rounded off by a highly polished front panel, which also houses two semi-circular LED volume indicators. All in all, this is a well thought out arrangement and the quality of performance is ok. However, the audio is not on the same level. Loudspeaker output, certainly loud, but lacking (at any power level) in speakers of different sizes (and 4 or 8 ohms) any defining characteristics. With larger speakers, the sound is a bit more concrete (especially at low frequencies), but the overall performance is mediocre. A notable problem, especially with a standard 2Vrms line input (e.g. from CD players, Hi-Fi DACs, etc.) is clipping distortion (saturation) at all gain levels. The amplifier appears to have been specifically designed for portable device output (typically 0.7-1.5Vrms). For example, there is no clipping distortion when connected to a first-generation iPod Shuffle (another poor excuse for an audio device), which can only handle about 0.75Vrms. Second, the headphone output is significantly worse than the speaker sound. The woo meter shows the actual power delivered to the speakers/headphones, not the input signal level. Thus woo meters are effectively disabled at lower power levels. Verdict: Good design, pretty good (rugged) performance, good connectivity but poor sound quality. Good for a casual little tailgate party or to power speakers in the garage/workplace. Nobsound/DoukAudio: Keep working on it guys, you'll make it - I know you'll make it. For the money - 3.5 stars.
