Part 1) I'm still firing this unit and getting a better feel for its sound quality so keep that in mind. I bought this to experiment with tube sound on a budget desktop/bedroom system and not ruin the sound too much. I entered cautiously and a little skeptically. System based on Laptop PC / Tidal HiFi > Topping d30 DAC > this Aiyima tube preamp (replaces JDS Labs OL Switcher passive preamp) > Emotiva basx a-100 integrated amplifier > for various Planar Magnetic headphones, dynamic headphones and stereo speakers. Lamps need time to perform. I read anywhere from 30 to 100 hours. When I first played the new unit out of the box (standard tubes) it sounded kind of broken, no bass and not a very good soundstage. BUT after a few hours of playback they started to sound better. Warmer and more detailed, with subtle coloring of voices and instruments. I have now replaced them with the Riverstone recommended GE JAN 5654w NOS bulbs (I keep the stock bulbs as a reserve). I'm burning them now. Overall, the unit delivers warmer detail, clarity, depth, and a different sonic presentation than a passive preamp. The passive was a kind of passive. and flat. This tube preamp sounds richer with more depth. I don't know if it's tubes or an op amp, but I'm impressed. I only have a few days but am very happy with the $75 investment (tubes included). Oh, Bluetooth and tone controls work too. I wish the tone controls had a mid discharge or kill switch. I don't use them often, but it's good to have them as an option, I keep them centered. I wanted to buy a brand with no bass/treble/bluetooth but it only cost a few bucks more. I also put a piece of putty in front of the overly bright red LED on the front panel. (Part 2) I've had it for a little over a week now and it's settled in pretty well. A good buy. Clear, transparent and detailed. Adds more realistic tone to the voices in my system and reduces (or not) any digital flare or solid state sharpness. The standard bulbs weren't bad (after breaking in) but the GE JAN 5654w bulbs are of better quality. However, this isn't a deal breaker unless you decide to upgrade. I am very happy with the sound of my system. Very satisfied considering performance and cost. I feel sorry for the BO$E customers who spent all that money on mediocre sound quality and didn't have an upgrade option unless they bought a completely different system. again. A family member bought a BO$E home theater system and tried to show me how good it sounded (he said it was the best), but I couldn't bring myself to tell him that mine was as good (if not better ) sounded less than half of what he spent. Keep listening to people. Hope this helps someone. E
