While the mark at the top will help ensure your cut goes the right way. The accuracy is so accurate. I've found that you can also use it to determine how accurate your tape measures are. I admit it was a bit sad to find out how many measuring tapes I have in my garage that are a bit off. Some are only 1/32 and some were 1/4 inch smaller. I took my time fixing each one simply by adjusting the hook, and some I could only fix by writing in the middle of the ribbon how much to add or subtract.
