When I asked about options for an 8 inch deep shelf instead of the standard 12 inch, I was surprised to hear from the manufacturer that they would tailor the product to mine Requirements. . 10 days later I had my custom made shelves delivered at no extra cost. Assembly instructions were included but no installation instructions, so here are my suggestions. Install these shelves. In fact, I'm so unprofessional that I accidentally ordered 8" deep shelves for my 1 x 8 and the manufacturer gently asked if I really needed 7 1/4" shelves! I started the installation by assembling and marking the holes for just the first shelf and the top connector. Then add one shelf section at a time. This gave me the option to decide if I wanted 3 or 4 shelves as I was placing them above my desk. In the end I settled on 4 shelves. I didn't have much luck with the anchor bolts from the kit, possibly because I used a screwdriver and kept pushing the anchor bolts through the wall. I wanted to use the included black screws so I tried using them with regular flanged anchors but the screws broke them. I ended up using black screws if I've ever screwed them into a joist, and my own chrome screws with my own anchors, and then blackened the heads with a marker - a theater set trick. I didn't pay too much attention to the orientation (rotation) of the screw holes unless I was on a stud and then made sure to align them vertically as shown in the instructions. I don't worry if a couple of screws don't grip. In the end, the block is attached to the wall with 40 screws! I have yet to paint them and plan to add an LED strip under the bottom shelf for desk lighting and on top of the top shelf for evening decorative indirect lighting only. Not sure if I'll be grooving the bottom board - I have a request to a local lumber dealer or add a piece to mask them. As you can probably see I'm super happy with the installation and the result.
