Frustrating at first but it worked.

There is nothing wrong with the tool itself, only the insertion was a problem. When confronted with the water pump, I found the holding tool fit perfectly in the 2:30 position with a wrench holding it in place. it was enough to squeeze them together to loosen the fan clutch nut.
