I bought these 6" screws so I could drive them through the 2 x 4 long side and then have the remaining 2 1/2" to put them on to attach to a wall stud. The company says that under ideal conditions, no pre-drilling is necessary. I decided to pre-drill because I was standing on the stairs leaning against a cabinet that was attached to the wall of my garage. Pre-drilling in this case assured me that the screws would be directed into the wall stud, which of course was behind the drywall and out of sight. I made sure to find the studs in the wall using a nail finder and then a small metal needle to poke through the drywall and into the stud. Why all the worries? Because I was attaching a large wooden cabinet to the wall that had previously only been attached with five screws, and one of those only went into the drywall, not the stud frame. Yes, he fell off the wall completely and spilled the contents of half-filled cans of paint. Of course they almost exploded when they hit the garage floor and now I've painted all the walls, curtained the closet underneath and you have the picture.
