Constructed from large, strong steel tubing. How large? The horizontal tubes are two inches in diameter. Cross tube pairs are 1 1/4". Cross tubes (diagonal) are welded to the horizontal tubes. These welds are very consistent; they look like they were made by robotic welders. Either that or someone at a distant factory is a damn good welder!The fabric on the seat and knee pads is strong and thick enough to last a long time.Although this fabric will thin over time, it is easy to repair or replace as it is simply stapled to the plywood backing.The Surface is powder coated, very even, smooth, matte black.All tubes are covered with plastic plugs to avoid sharp edges that can catch on clothes.Assembly is very easy as the screws are already there!Four screws secure the backrest Knee pads come pre-assembled!Two more screws hold the 3/8" tubular cross member in place. (The crossbar tube is the small tube that attaches to the air regulator.) You only need to loosen ONE of these to attach the crossbar to the air bridge. Only five small screws! Nice. Rather than being wrapped in a bag, the fasteners simply attach; So all you have to do is unscrew the screws and then put them back where they were. All you need is a Phillips or flathead screwdriver. The screws are for both. Having collected too many superfluous items in my time, I REALLY appreciate how blessedly simple and reliable this system is. It would be hard to screw things up...unless you have a cheeky harness. The instructions are written in clear English with clear large diagrams. The charts alone are enough to see how it fits together. Even an illiterate idiot can collect it. Our current President (2017) would be a good test subject. All instructions fit on ONE page. If IKEA and other companies adopted this simple and straightforward assembly system, they could double or triple their sales. I needed a rubber mallet to hammer them all the way in. Those with meathook hands could probably pound them without a hammer. The pneumatic lift works without any problems. Sounds like auxiliary lifts on a minivan. The seat cushion is fine. just right for my bony ass. I feel like the knee pad needs to be deeper and softer. I'm comfortable in his current form for about ten minutes, then I have to change positions or stand up. It's probably good?! After all, these chairs are about preventing problems from sitting for long periods of time. I personally think the knee pad area should be much wider. I have to keep my knees together to have any kind of support. It may be good for a woman with a dress, but as a man I find this disposition good. (ahem) "restriction" if you get my meaning. I chose this one because of the cheap price, but I am pleasantly surprised by the reliable quality. I'm just a little disappointed with the comfort, but that's more a feature of MY design than this chair. To be fair, I think it would be great for a petite woman, but it just doesn't suit men, especially those with obese builds. So please don't ignore this well-made chair just because it doesn't fit a big fat man. It has good characteristics and is suitable for a small and light person. The one used to keeping her feet together, which of course Miley Cyrus rules out.
