The iPad's surrounding itself is made of hard plastic, it's a bit difficult to insert but it's sturdy. The apple pencil holder is only for the bare pencil, so if you add something to the apple pencil, it won't fit anymore. It's a secure fit, though for a soft apple pencil. The case doesn't stand up straight, but that seems to be a common problem with these triple iPad Air cases given their size. If that bothers you, consider ones that extend to the front of the screen and have slots for holding. Only once did it fall about a meter off the hard floor but didn't damage it at all.
