They look good on the top half of hair that is gathered back. They don't really close around my hair in a ponytail, but I think I'll just have to experiment. I don't want to look like Madonna in the 80's but the width is perfect. I just wish there was a little more room to hold the hair well. This is NOT just a baby clasp! I have thin straight thick hair and it just "almost" closes for me. Since my hair was falling out, I actually felt like I had to experiment! Also be very careful when you pull them out because until I get it right they were pulling out some of their hair and trying to undo the clasp. I think I just need to practice.
