I replaced a Rotel RCD 1072 with this unit. The Rotel is very good, but I needed a deck that could play Sakde and also wanted better performance on Redbook CDs. I have received these things. The Yamaha has more 3D depth than the Rotel and is more relaxed (some reviewers called the Yamaha "polite," which is a good description). On some CDs, however, I prefer Rotel's more straightforward presentation. An odd Yamaha feature is the adjustable dpll. It states that the lower the bandwidth setting, the more accurate the DAC clock, but the higher the chance of jumps. I don't understand this and the literature provided doesn't explain it. In practice this means that the disk sometimes jumps and I have to change the dpll setting to a higher bandwidth and it's annoying. When I bought this unit I would only keep it if it had a significantly better sound than the rotel. It is, and I'm keeping it, although the improvement is very subtle. The improvement is noticeable on regular CDs, not just Sacds. It also doesn't hurt that the workmanship is very solid and the optics of the device are appealing.
