Overall I'd say they're functional. However, I often choose not to use them when washing my head. Both brush types (grey and black) are comfortable in the handles. They are gray to the touch, slightly softer and nicer overall, and that can help the shampoo lather. However, if you have normal or thick hair, it will be difficult to reach the scalp with a gray brush because the bristles are very short. Black has longer, thicker bristles that can reach the scalp but end up feeling a bit stiff or prickly. Again, you can get them to work, but I wasn't thrilled with them.
