Review on Mediasonic USB 3.1 4 Bay 3.5” SATA Hard Drive Enclosure - High-Speed USB 3.1 Gen 2 Type C/USB-C (10Gbps) for Efficient Data Transfer by Steve Yang

Great case, high bandwidth, perfect for building a SAN with an Intel NUC

Nice compact case, it's *very* quiet, durable and as fast as the drives you put in it. Hardware RAID system (Mediasonic will release it soon). But I knew I would use an Intel NUC with Linux to create a SAN. It's roughly the same price as hardware RAID solutions, but uses open source and the NUC can do other chores. I have a NUC that connects to this array via USB 3.1 and uses the network via Thunderbolt 3 to send 40Gbps to my Macbook Pro (yes, 40X faster than Gigabit Ethernet! Required for 4K video editing). If you use Linux, beware of UAS. Some drives (like my Seagate 8TB drives) work fine for a while but then fail. This is an incompatibility between Linux and Seagate drives, not Seagate's or Mediasonic's fault. Search the web for "UAS disable storage quirks" to learn how to get your drive working with Linux. This slows down performance a bit, but should be done until UAS properly supports your drive. Make sure to use the provided handles and the washers are firmly attached to the unit when attaching the front bezel. Some design issues Mediasonic might consider for later generations: Would be better not to need handles or a frame, but they are easy to install and make ejecting discs a breeze (easier than my Drobo which it replaces). LEDs next to each drive (for easy identification, the drive activity LEDs are located horizontally on the top of the drive, while the drives are arranged vertically). Plug and insert it from the back. The front panel buttons are small and unobtrusive, while the larger LED-backlit buttons allow for easy operation. I'm going to buy a second block (to replace my second Drobo) and it would be nice to be able to mechanically connect the two blocks; a bonus if you can plug in power, and a double bonus if you can daisy chain USB or eSATA.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Bad impression
