I've never used a hub with switches, but I'm glad I have this one. I use it to connect external hard drives to my computer. When I'm not using the drive, I can tell the computer to turn off (safely remove hardware icon in Windows) but leave the drive connected to the hub. I electronically turn it off with a switch and it's easy to reconnect the drive by turning the switch on. (Since I'm using a backup drive, disabling the switch helps prevent a virus from accessing the drive when I'm not using it.)
