I was able to upload files to it fairly quickly and play it for testing, but the ONLY complaint is that the device disconnects and reconnects every 20-25 minutes if left plugged in. For me this is a deal breaker (how was I to know it couldn't get any worse) and unfortunately I will most likely be returning it. I believe my laptop's USB port is 3.0 (aka 3.2 gen1?). It's a bit older than this device which I think is 3.1 (aka 3.2 Gen 2?) but I don't see why the device shouldn't be compatible with it. I haven't had any USB issues with anything I've used (printers, flash drives, cellphone, mice, etc.). Update: The product works fine when I don't use the cable that came with it. Probably gave a cheap cable. I've used GoPro and Apple cables and they both held the connection for as long as needed with no issues.
