Review 2/24/16 states that if the can/"box" is not aligned with the retrofit tie rods, the spots will not come out evenly. However, regardless of the orientation of the original can/box, the visible block is designed to be rotated 45 degrees to make the necessary orientation adjustments. I found that to work quite well. On some cans (Murphy's Law) the tension rods may not fit in the intended groove, but they themselves provide enough tension to hold the retainer firmly in my 5" cans even when not inserted in the actual groove. .
